I believe beauty can be found in unexpected places. I have chosen the humble concrete block as my muse. Can I elevate this common building material into artwork that the viewer finds compelling or beautiful? That is my artistic goal. I am addicted to walls and seduced by cement. I paint realistic portraits of concrete blocks and cinder block walls in acrylic on silk. Due to silk’s fine weave, the illusion of cement is not compromised by the texture of canvas. I utilize brushes, rubbing, and spray paint to transform the silk into concrete. No computer, printing, silk screen, image transfer, or photographic techniques are used. My paintings succeed if someone pauses on the street and says, “Now that is a beautiful wall.”
